2012: The Band drummer & singer Levon Helm died of throat cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He was 71 years old.
2002: Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley was found dead in his apartment in Seattle of a drug overdose. It was estimated that Staley had died on April 5th, two weeks before his body was discovered. He was 34 years old.
2001: David Lee Roth confirmed internet rumors that he briefly reunited with Van Halen the previous July and wrote new songs with Eddie Van Halen and that he had not been in contact with the band since then. Roth later rejoined Van Halen in 2006.
1999: Neil Young performed at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden, but the venue mistakenly billed him as Bob Dylan. During the concert, Young jokingly said “That was Bob playing guitar with me on the last song.”
1990: On BBC-TV’s French and Saunders show, a comedy courthouse sketch featured appearances by David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Gary Moore and Lemmy. The sketch ended with a jam by the musicians.
1980: R.E.M. performed their first concert as R.E.M. at the 11:11 Koffee Club in Athens, GA to an audience of 150 people.
1980: Judas Priest reached the top five of the U.K. Album Chart for the first time with British Steel which peaked at number four. It would also be their first album to reach the top forty of the Billboard 200 Album Chart peaking at number thirty-four in July of the same year.
1978: The Patti Smith Group released “Because the Night” which later went on to peak at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, making it Smith’s biggest hit in the U.S. Smith co-wrote the song with Bruce Springsteen.
1969: Steppenwolf peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Rock Me” which was their third and final top ten single in the U.S.
