2008: Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora pled no contest to one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol. Sambora received three years probation.

1993: The Who’s Tommy premiered on Broadway at the St. James Theatre, where it performed until June 17, 1995.

1990: Ric Ocasek of The Cars performed his debut solo concert at New York City’s Central Park as part of Earth Day festivities on a bill that also included the B-52’s and Hall & Oates.

1981: Eric Clapton was hospitalized with bruised ribs and a lacerated shin after a car accident in Seattle, two days after being released from a hospital in St. Paul, MN.

1979: The Rolling Stones performed two benefit concerts for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind in Oshawa, ON as part of fulfilling Keith Richards’ 1978 sentence for possession of heroin. John Belushi emceed both concerts.

1972: Deep Purple reached number one on the U.K. album chart with Machine Head, which began a three week run on top.

1969: At a ceremony on the roof of the Apple building in London, John Lennon changed his middle name from Winston to Ono.

1969: The Who performed Tommy live in its entirety for the first time during a concert in Dolton, U.K.
